| Sporty Range Flagship | 2008 Toyota Auris SR180 |
During the preview phase for the Auris hatchback, Toyota displayed show cars featuring a discreetly sportier stance than that available on the showroom models. Until now. Finally the first sporting version of the Auris has surfaced and it goes on sale in Britain on January 1st.
Conventional hot hatch fans may be disappointed that the new Auris SR180 features a turbodiesel engine under the bonnet, but it is at least a high-performance unit of 2.2-litre capacity. Peak power is a respectable 175bhp, but of more use will be the 295lb.ft of torque produced from as low as 2,000rpm. Consequently, the 0-62mph sprint takes just 8.1 seconds, though we expect that mid-range urge will be more impressive again. Toyota states the combined cycle fuel economy as 45.6mpg, which no petrol hot hatch can compete with.
Despite the impressive opposite lock photograph supplied by the press office, obviously the power is still channelled through the front wheels only. That's a lot of torque to contend with, so unsurprisingly traction control and vehicle stability control is standard on the SR180. The chassis has undergone a few tweaks though, including lower springs and a lightweight double wishbone rear suspension.
Aesthetically, the lower ride height improves the stance, as does the roof spoiler and 17-inch five-spoke alloys. At the time of writing, the only pictures available are of the five-door version, but the three-door variant goes on sale at the same time and should look even better, especially in the new 'Pure White' paint colour illustrated.
Reflecting the SR180's position at the top of the range is a generous level of standard equipment, including climate control, auto lights and wipers, tinted rear privacy glass and cruise control. The price for the three-door is £17,995, with the five-door £500 more. Toyota will sell you the new Auris straightway, with first deliveries in January.
