Alfa is due to introduce an all-new BMW 5-series rival in 2006. Expect the new Alfa Romeo 168 (as it is predicted to be called) to be a real stunner, taking the current stylish trend a step further. Furthermore the car will share technology with sister-companies Maserati and Ferrari.
The Alfa 168 will replace the 166 (which recently received a face-lift) in the next two years. Sources say that Alfa Romeo are pinning their image hopes as a prestige car manufacturer on the 168.
To achieve this more upmarket image the 168 may adopt the same basic front-engined and rear-driven layout as the new Maserati Quattroporte and
Ferrari 612S.
Another gizmo destined for use in the 168 is a new electronically controlled rear-wheel steering system. This is a radical new development as many manufacturers have stayed away from active rear-wheel steering (Mitsubishi and Honda being the exceptions). It should make an interesting drive, though it is thought that the 168 will be biased towards safety rather than out and out sportiness.
Rear-wheel steering can be used to help maintain stability at speed, increase agility at low speeds and make emergency manoeuvres much safer.
The 168 is likely to be a bigger car than the current 166 and fit and finish are expected to improve along with Alfa's aspirations for sales.
