What's all this about?
It's the to-be-expected Coupe variant of the monstrous Porsche Cayenne Electric SUV, following on from the only other generation of Cayenne Coupe in the nameplate's 24-year-history.
Is the Coupe quicker than the SUV?
Possibly ever marginally so, as it is slightly more aerodynamic at 0.23Cd (SUV: 0.25Cd), it can be specified with a 17.6-kilo-saving Lightweight Sport Package and it could therefore be a gnat's trimmer overall. But when you're talking about cars with 442hp, 666hp and 1,156hp accordingly, we're not exactly dealing with slowcoaches in the first place.
Oh, are the same three powertrains of the Cayenne Electric found in the Coupe?
They are indeed. The opening salvo will be the 442hp Cayenne Coupe Electric, it's the Cayenne S Coupe Electric in the middle at 666hp, and then of course the demented Cayenne Turbo Coupe Electric, with its startling 1,156hp/1,500Nm Launch Control party trick, presiding over all at the top of the tree.
What does the revised bodywork do to practicality?
Nothing too terrible, save for a sizeable drop in boot capacity when stated in litres. The reality is, you'll open the sloping rear hatch of the Cayenne Coupe Electric and gaze on its cargo bay favourably, because it looks and is pretty big and capacious. But on paper, the volume of the Coupe is down to 534 litres with all seats in use and 1,347 litres with the second row folded away; these stats compare to 781 and 1,588 litres respectively in the SUV.
As its roofline is 24mm lower overall, there's also slightly less passenger space in the back of the Cayenne Coupe (we know, as we sat in a highly secretive example at the launch of the regular SUV, the Coupe hidden away as it was in a studio where no phones or cameras were allowed) than there is in the regular Porsche machine, although it's still a gratifying place to have to sit. Anyway, Stuttgart knows the Coupe is less practical, hence it comes with two electrically adjustable rear seats as standard, rather than a full bench. There is a '2+1' option available, though, if you prefer it.
And in all other respects, the Coupe is the same as the Cayenne Electric SUV?
Yep. Well, aside from the windscreen, which is a slightly different shape to that fitted to the more upright SUV. But otherwise, the Coupe has the same active aerodynamics, the same overall length, the same wheelbase, the same width, the same classy interior complete with the OLED Flow Display infotainment and a phalanx of high-tech, gigantic screens - it's all good.
Do we know prices of the Porsche Cayenne Coupe Electric as yet?
Not officially, but it's about 1.8-3.6 per cent more expensive than the Cayenne Electric SUV, model-for-model, in Porsche's native Germany, so we'd expect a similar uptick here. Reckon on something like £86,000-£133,250 for the Cayenne Coupe range, then, as and when prices are confirmed.
