What's all this about?
The rebirth of Jaguar. We all know the British sports-car company has decided to drastically alter its corporate direction, and as part of the transitional period there's been a significant hiatus in any new products appearing from the company for some while now. However, the forthcoming four-door GT electric vehicle (EV), based on the Type 00 Concept car, is entering the crucial phases of its development.
This includes some wintry testing, I presume, looking at the pics?
You're a proper Sherlock Holmes, aren't you? Yes, Jaguar reckons its GT EV is undergoing the 'toughest validation programme' in the company's history, which not only includes real-world testing - in the usual extremes of temperatures, from hot desert roads to this current cycle taking place up in the bits of Sweden that are within the Arctic Circle, with the mercury dropping as low as -40 deg C - but also a lot of virtual and rig-testing as well.
What do we know about the GT's specs at this point?
A few scant stats, but they're pertinent ones. Such as its all-wheel-drive, tri-motor set-up will deliver in excess of 1,000hp, so Jaguar needs to know how it will safely transmit such ample power to the road surface in low-grip conditions. And also the GT is fitted with ThermAssist, a thermal-management technology that reduces the energy consumption required for cabin heating by up to 40 per cent - which it achieves by harvesting as much otherwise-lost heat as it can to warm both the propulsion system and the passenger compartment in temperatures as low as -10 deg C.
Jag's engineers are also fine-tuning the calibration for an array of advanced chassis systems fitted to the EV, including all-wheel steering, dynamic air suspension and active twin-valve dampers. The team in Sweden is also putting a 23-inch set of winter tyres through their paces too.
Any words from the development crew behind the Jaguar GT EV?
Yes, over to Matt Becker, the vehicle engineering director for Jaguar, who said: "Jaguar has always been about driving pleasure and our new electric four-door GT will be no different. It marks a step-change in our technical ambitions. Innovative in-house electric propulsion technologies combine with the car's unique proportions and low centre of gravity for a luxurious grand tourer that drives like nothing else. Like a true Jaguar, it can be comfortable when you wish, is engaging to drive and, with more than 1,000hp, always has power in reserve."
When do we get to see the Jaguar GT undisguised?
Later this year, hopefully, with a world premiere set for some time in 2026. Rawdon Glover, the MD of the firm, said: "Our aim from the outset has been to deliver a true Jaguar driving experience and we have crafted a hugely desirable car that will be as captivating to drive as it is to look at."
