What's all this about?
Aston Martin has proudly announced that it is the first automotive manufacturer in the world to deliver Apple CarPlay Ultra to its customers, which builds on the capabilities of 'regular' CarPlay for what is said to be the ultimate in-car, human-machine interface experience.
What, precisely, does Ultra do that CarPlay doesn't?
Optimised for the next-generation infotainment system in Astons, which debuted in 2023 across the entire range of DBX SUV, Vantage and DB12, and was then adopted by the flagship Vanquish too, it provides real-time information on both the central touchscreen and the digital instrument cluster of any car it is fitted to. It's the configurability of the latter item which marks Ultra out, as owners can choose from a number of designs of speedo and rev-counter dials, as well as the ability to project full-screen mapping and media into the cluster. Even the vehicle's radio and climate functions can be controlled through either the touchscreen controls or via Siri, while there are 'override' switches for the most-used controls such as chassis, ESP, exhaust, lane assist and the park distance control. Aston Martin says it worked closely in partnership with Apple to ensure that CarPlay Ultra is compatible with the marque's design philosophy, and that it looks recognisably Aston-esque when in operation.
So this is available on all new Aston Martins from now on, yes?
It is... as long as you live in the USA or Canada. It will be the standard specification on all four product lines in these territories from now on, but Aston will expand the offering to all global markets - including our own, its home turf - within the next 12 months. Perhaps the better news for owners of existing 2023-on Aston Martins which are fitted with the upgraded infotainment system is that CarPlay Ultra will be offered as a software update, available through dealers, in the coming weeks. To make Ultra work, you need an iPhone 12 or later, which is running at least iOS 18.54 or any subsequent versions.
What does Aston say about all this?
Adrian Hallmark, the CEO of Aston Martin, said: "Aston Martin is delighted to have collaborated with Apple and to be first to launch CarPlay Ultra. As a brand, our focus on world-leading performance goes beyond the traditional attributes associated with powertrains, dynamic performance and craftsmanship.
"The integration of CarPlay Ultra is a clear example of the dedication to collaborate with the best companies in the world to bring unique experiences and in-vehicle capabilities to our customers. Building on our in-house, state-of-the-art infotainment system, CarPlay Ultra will provide additional functionality and personalisation opportunities which place Aston Martin at the forefront of infotainment in the sector."
And has Apple anything to add?
It sure does. Bob Borchers, the company's vice-president of worldwide product marketing, said: "iPhone users love CarPlay and it has changed the way people interact with their vehicles. With CarPlay Ultra, together with automakers we are reimagining the in-car experience and making it even more unified and consistent.
"The next generation of CarPlay gives drivers a smarter, safer way to use their iPhone in the car, deeply integrating with the vehicle while maintaining the very best of the automaker. We are thrilled to begin rolling out CarPlay Ultra with Aston Martin, with more manufacturers to come."
