What's this about?

This is the Volkswagen ID.7 GTX, the sporty electric saloon and estate from Wolfsburg.

Hang on, didn't we already see this?

Well, er, yes we did. But VW has given us some more information about it!

Oh great! So do we now know how much it costs, how far it goes on a charge, and how quick it is?

Ummm... not really, no. The closest we know is that it will hit 62mph in less than six seconds.

Oh. OK. Well, what do we now know?

Well, we know that the ID.7 GTX will get a total of 340hp from two electric motors. The one at the back (called AP550) is the one we've seen already in the standard ID.7 saloon. The one at the front is a new motor, with 80kW and it uses 'asynchronous' technology which means that it's really efficient and uses no energy when you don't need to use it. That should stretch the range a bit (which we're guesstimating will be around 370 miles when VW finally admits to it).

What about the battery?

That's new too - it has 86kWh of energy capacity (compared to the regular ID.7's 77kWh) - and can charge more quickly too, at up to 200kW on a DC charger. VW says that it also gets a sophisticated new battery management system that can speed up charging times, especially in winter. Plus there's an integrated charging function in the sat-nav, so you can pre-plan all the stops you need to make on any lengthy journey.

Will it handle, though?

It ought to. VW has tweaked the suspension and added a 'sporty, progressive steering system'. There's also a clever computer that now better controls the DCC adaptive suspension, and VW engineers claim that the adjustable output of the motors allows for a sharper and sportier driving experience thanks to some clever diff control via the XDS+ system.

What about the styling?

You get GTX-specific bumpers front and rear, new 'arrowhead' LED running lights, light-up VW logos at the front and back, and standard 20-inch 'Skagen' alloys, with 21-inch rims as an option.

Does the cabin look nice?

Oh yes. There are sports seats with microfibre trim made from largely recycled materials, plus optional seat massage and lashings and lashings of GTX badges and red stitching. Plus the touchscreen can (theoretically) talk back to you - it comes with ChatGPT artificial intelligence tech.

Anything else we've learned?

Well, the towing weight has gone up, from 1,000kg to 1,400kg thanks to the four-wheel drive...

What does VW say?

"With its 250kW drive and outstandingly dynamic tuning, the new ID.7 GTX demonstrates the fascinating sporting potential offered by electric Volkswagen models," says Kai Grnitz, VW's head of development. "Together with the latest-generation ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX and the ID.3 GTX and ID. Buzz GTX, which will also be launched this year parallel to the ID.7 GTX and ID.7 GTX Tourer, we have put a GTX family on wheels that offers a whole new level of fascination in terms of dynamic performance. That is because the acceleration of all these Volkswagen models - with a clearly noticeable punch - is simply a lot of fun. Combined with high efficiency, this driving pleasure is a vital aspect of Volkswagen e-mobility."
