What's all this about?

We've already seen the Volkswagen ID.4 EV SUV in disguised format before this, but here's the first look at sketches of the production version. It'll be the follow-up model in VW's ID range after the ID.3 hatchback.

And what can we glean from this?

Well, it's all about the mouthpieces of VW. Klaus Zyciora, the head of design for the Volkswagen Group, said: "The ID.4 represents an electric design evolution. Its exterior design is clean, flowing and powerful. It appears strong and self-confident in a new way. This is mainly due to the seamless, aerodynamic style of our ID. family, which we have transferred to the SUV segment for the first time with the ID.4. This means that gentle, soft transitions alternate with sharp, clear separating edges. The design looks as if shaped by the wind itself. At the same time, the modern look of the ID.4 can be seen by the characteristic headlights and the signature light between them."

It's not just about the look, though, because good design in an EV leads to lower aerodynamic drag, which in turn increases electric-driving range. The ID.4 apparently achieves a slippery figure of 0.28Cd, and Zyciora added: "The electric design evolution of the ID.4 also means that we have focused very strongly on the aerodynamics."

Anything else?

As part of the Transform 2025+ strategy, Volkswagen will invest around 11 billion (9.85bn) on electric mobility by 2024. The ID.4 will be the second model on the MEB electric platform after the ID.3 and should have a WLTP-ratified range in excess of 311 miles thanks to its shape. It will launch initially as a rear-wheel-drive vehicle, with a four-wheel-drive variant following at a later stage.
