Much, much, MUCH excite about this one - since SEAT hived Cupra off to form its own brand in 2018, we've had a succession of crossovers and SUVs from the fledgling marque. Not that we dislike the only one we've driven so far, which is the rather charming Ateca, but by following that up with the Formentor and then the Tavascan, there has been a little bit of... deflation among the enthusiast fraternity about the direction Cupra is taking. So let this car reignite the fires of passion in Cupra. It's the new hot Leon, based on the incoming Mk4 variant. A whole family of 'em, in fact, including a hatchback and a Sports Tourer (which might just go by the name Estate here in the UK, but we digress), and two racing versions as well, which are the Cupra Leon Competición and the Cupra e-Racer. Perhaps the bigger news, though, is that the Cupra Leon (which is different from a Leon Cupra, you see) is going to be a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), like the recently announced, also-in-Volkswagen-Group, next-gen Skoda Octavia vRS iV. However, Cupra makes mention of the Leon having a 'high-performance PHEV drivetrain'. And no disrespect to the new fast Octavia intended, but 245hp for the Cupra Leon just would not cut it - especially as the outgoing Mk3 had 280hp at launch, up to 310hp as a Cupra R and then a whopping 350hp if you ticked the magnificent 'Abt' upgrade right at the end of its life. Anyway, all the new Cupra Leons will be revealed at a special event in Barcelona on February 20, and Wayne Griffiths, CEO of Cupra and clearly also a Kings of Leon fan, said: "The Leon Cupra has been a bestseller, with close to 44,000 units sold of the last generation. With the launch of the new Cupra Leon, we will strengthen the Cupra brand, by giving a new identity to a very emblematic car. The new Cupra Leon is the 'King of Leons'."
