Jeep took the opportunity of the Geneva Motor Show to confirm that plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) versions of its two smallest models - namely, the Renegade and the Compass - are incoming. Details on the newcomers are a little fuzzy at the moment, as Jeep would only confirm that they'd have 'between 190- and 240hp', with a target for CO2 emissions of less than 50g/km for each. Power comes from an electrically augmented 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine, with the electric motor residing on the rear axle and providing all-wheel drive without the need for a physical drive shaft to the back - Jeep calls this electric AWD (eAWD). Both PHEV crossovers should be able to go up to 31 miles on electric power alone, with their EV top speeds limited to 80mph. Furthermore, the Renegade PHEV will do 0-62mph in around seven seconds, while the Compass PHEV is the most powerful model in that line-up yet. Both will get dedicated instrument clusters and infotainment screens, relating to their part-electric nature, and additional switchgear within too, and while there's no word regarding their potential on-sale dates, the near-finished nature of the Geneva show cars suggest they'll both be available well before the end of 2019.
