What's going on?
Aston Martin has sent us a press release stating that the re-introduction of its high-end luxury brand, Lagonda, will kick off in 2021 with the launch of an SUV. Not only that, but it will be a battery-powered electric car, as will all future Lagonda models for the foreseeable future.
Brave statement. How does it look?
You'll have to use a little imagination here, I'm afraid, as there are no official shots of the car as yet, just the designer sketch above and the assertion from Aston Martin EVP and Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman, that it will follow the lead of the attention-grabbing Vision Concept unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year: "The Lagonda SUV will retain the boldness of the Vision Concept. Lagonda is a luxury brand, but it is also one rooted in technology. It will be like no other SUV to drive, so its looks have to reflect that new reality and to serve as pathfinder to a future in which the most desirable and prestigious automobiles still have a place."
What about the mechanicals?
No word on those either, so have another quote from the management instead, this time from Aston Martin President and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Andy Palmer: "In reviving one of the most iconic names in motoring we have created a unique opportunity. One that allows us to cast aside an inherited 20th century approach and instead design cars around 21st century demands and desires. The Lagonda SUV is the first of its kind: a spacious, high-performance 4x4 that successfully reconciles a love of technology, luxury and style."
Can I squeeze in a reference to the wedge-shaped Lagonda designed by William Towns that everyone loves so much?
Consider it done...
