What's this then?
This is the Ferrari 488 Track.
Pardon?
Yup. This is the new hardcore version of the Ferrari 488, and it's called the 488 Pista, which is Italian for track.
Hmm. Probably a bit quick, then, is it?
Just a touch, yes. Engine power leaps up by 50hp to a whopping 720hp, from a tuned version of the 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8 in the standard GTB, which Ferrari now says has the highest horsepower-per-litre figure in its class. It also has lots of torque too, 770Nm of the stuff. 0-62mph is done in just 2.85 seconds. Top speed is well over 200mph.
Wow. So I guess there's some clever tech to keep it all under control?
Ferrari says that the whole concept of the car has been taken directly from the hugely successful series of GTE Le Mans race cars, so there are proper trick aerodynamics. This includes a clever 'S-Duct' for the front end, a blown rear spoiler and massive diffuser which all add up to a 20 per cent increase in downforce compared to the standard 488.
There's also a host of driver aids, from Side Slip Control (Ferrari's answer to Drift Mode) to an electronic diff, magnetic dampers and a brainy traction control system. Plus you get a new gizmo, Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer, which uses the brakes to help keep the car pointing where you want it and to smooth out your control inputs. In spite of all the extra grunt and the racing stripes, Ferrari actually says that this Pista is designed to "make the car's performance on the limit easier to reach and control."
Style-wise, you'll spot a Pista from the stripes, and from some small styling tweaks including a shorter nose and the new dolphin-tail rear wing.
