What's all this about?
Just days from the full reveal of the Lamborghini Urus luxury SUV, Lamborghini released another teaser video, this time featuring chief designer, Mitja Borkert, talking about the influences on the styling of the newcomer.
OK, so what are we looking at? The Countach and the LM002?
Have you been reading up on this elsewhere? Yes, they are precisely the two old Lambos which have informed the look of the new twin-turbo V8 Urus. The Countach lends its diagonal lines - when viewed directly from the front or rear - to the SUV, as well as its 'two-thirds body, one-third windows' sporty look in profile and a low-at-the-front, rising bonnet line. The mighty LM002, meanwhile, provides a triangular air vent sporting an Italian tricolore aft of the front wheels, as well as the hexagonal wheelarches.
Is that all the LM002 can give?!
Come on, let's try and remember Lamborghini's previous attempt at an, um, SUV properly, shall we? It was clearly designed with a set-square and looked like a rudimentary version of a Hummer. Weighing the same as the Moon and about as aerodynamic as a 1960s tower block, the fuel consumption was so laughable that the LM002 had a 290-litre fuel tank. Or 63.8 gallons, for better reference. As it was powered by either the contemporary Countach's 5.2-litre V12 or a special order 7.2-litre marine V12, at current average petrol prices it would cost £336.40 to fill the LM002's cavernous tank from empty. Hardly what we need in this eco-conscious day and age, now is it?
Fair point. Have we got any more details on the Urus?
Lamborghini says the interior design of its new SUV allows the driver to 'feel like a pilot', with a low seating position and an encompassing sweep of dashboard and controls. The hexagonal theme, an ongoing trait of the Italian company, is continued with the cabin's design theme.
Anything else?
Yes, you can watch the video with Mitja, which includes a shot of the Urus barrelling through a dusty corner with some opposite lock (for those of you not so interested in design chat), right here.
