This week sees Volkswagen extend the Polo range with the addition of the new Dune and range topping GTi models.
The latest from VW to be given a 'four-wheel drive makeover', the Polo Dune offers styling in the shape of 17-inch wheels, silver roof bars and the obligatory raising of the suspension (by 20mm). Although looking like a 4x4 it only comes equipped with the
standard VW Polo front-wheel drive transmission. Power is generated from either a 1.4-litre petrol or a 1.4-litre TDI diesel unit. The oil burner comes at an £850 premium.
February also sees the
VW Polo GTi released in both three- and five-door format. Under the bonnet is a proven 1.8-litre 20-valve turbocharged lump developing 148bhp making the latest VW Polo, not surprisingly, the most powerful yet. Styling cues are taken from its older brother, the
VW Golf GTi with the honeycomb front grille and twin chrome tail pipes. The ride height has been dropped by 15mm and been given a set of GTi 16-inch rims; red brake callipers complete the look.
Standard equipment on both models includes ABS with Hydraulic Brake Assist, airbags all round and climatic semi-automatic air conditioning. Remote central locking with an alarm is added to electric windows and mirrors and a CD player is thrown in for good measure. The GTi also gets Volkswagen's Electronic Stability Programme to rein in the engine's excesses.
If you prefer your ride height higher, then expect to pay £12,645 for a VW Polo Dune, available from mid April. If you can afford the extra performance then opt for the VW Polo GTi and expect to pay £14,785, available from mid May. Watch out for our review of the Polo derivatives later this year on the
VW Road Tests page. Both cars get their European debut at the
Geneva Motor Show next month.
