What's this all about?
Audi has whipped the covers off its new Q5 at the Paris Motor Show, and there's a raft of changes according to Chairman Rupert Stadler: "With the new Q5 we are setting the bar a notch higher. Among the great innovations are the quattro drive system with ultra technology, highly efficient engines, the air suspension with damper control and a comprehensive line-up of infotainment and assistance systems."
The usual spiel, but what has actually changed?
Less weight in a car is always positive, and the new Q5 has shed 90kg in comparison to its predecessor. This is due to the use of the MLB platform, shared with the Audis A4 and Q7. Cargo volume is up ten litres on the outgoing model and there's sensor control of the big tailgate to aid squeezing in those big loads.
But will it move?
It should, especially since the engineers have squeezed more power out of the 2.0-litre turbodiesels. Five engine choices will be available at launch over here, four TDI and one TFSI petrol, with more in the pipeline including SQ5 and RS Q5 versions.
What else do I need to know?
Styling is generic Audi fare, with 14 paint colours available to choose from. Inside, there's the option of the 'Virtual Cockpit' dash display and wifi hotspot, with a choice of infotainment screens. Air suspension can also be picked, handily pitching the Q5 into direct competition with the Mercedes-Benz GLC.
