What's this all about?
This is the BMW X2 Concept, but you can think of it as a sort of X1 coupe. It looks good, if you can get over the gigantic inverted front kidney grilles. BMW's Design head Karim Habib says: "The BMW Concept X2 combines the fast-moving body language and low-slung proportions of a coupe with the robust construction of an X model. This is a sporty vehicle with a bold character, and it allows us to open up some fascinating new design possibilities for the BMW brand."
But it's only a concept?
True for now, but it's due to go on sale in the next year or so with only slight changes. The platform is common with the X1 and 2017 MINI Countryman, and a range of diesel powerplants can be specified in 18d (150hp), 20d (190hp) and 25d (230hp) forms. There's also an M Sport version in the pipeline with a 300hp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol, so there'll be go to match the show. BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system should feature on the higher-powered models at least.
What about the interior?
The real answer is we don't know, because the concept on display had blacked-out windows, but you can bet that it will take heavily from the X1's cabin. The current market trend for crossover-SUV things shows no signs of abating, so you can be sure that the X2 will prove to be a popular choice once it becomes available.
