What's all this about?
The Volkswagen Transporter van began production on March 8th, 1956, and to celebrate there's a special exhibition taking place in its home city.
Which city would that be?
Hanover, in the Lower Saxony region of Germany. The Historical Museum of Hanover will hold the exhibition until June 26th, during which pristine examples of old Transporters - dating right back to the original 'Bulli' - will be on show, as will photos and videos documenting the history of production at the site. On three days of the week, the company's apprentices will show visitors to the exhibition the current manufacturing processes for the 21st century Transporter.
Is the Transporter what was once known as the Type 2 - the Flower Power van?
Indeed so, and it was named as the Beetle was the Volkswagen Type 1. Lots of people know the 'Bay Window' Type 2 best of all, which appeared in 1967, but Volkswagen had already built a million of the original by 1962, five years prior. Impressive stuff, eh?
