Mercedes-AMG launches hardcore GT R
Fancy using a GT3 car every day? That's not far off what the new Mercedes-AMG GT R is.

Ahhhh, my eyes!

Yes, that paint is quite eye-catching, isn't it? It's called 'AMG green hell magno', and it's a none-too-subtle hint at where this car was developed. This is the new Mercedes-AMG GT R, a lighter, more powerful and considerably upgraded model that goes on sale at the end of the year.

Ok, start with the power...

Arguably the updated engine is the least significant aspect of the GT R, but AMG still comprehensively overhauled the twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 and tweaked the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission bolted to it. Taking the current range topper, the AMG GT S, as the benchmark, the GT R's maximums of 585hp and 700Nm represent gains of 75hp and 50Nm respectively. The top speed creeps up modestly to just under 200mph and the 0-62mph time drops from 3.8 to 3.6 seconds. Apparently the engine modifications will result in quicker throttle response too thanks in no small part to a lighter flywheel.

And what about the chassis?

Now we're talking. Mercedes-AMG categorically states that this car was developed for use on track. Forged aluminium components are used all-round, along with uniball spherical bearings at the back and fully adjustable coil-over suspension. That needs to be tweaked manually of course, but all drivers can adjust the AMG Ride Control adaptive damping system from within the AMG Dynamic Select driving mode menu. There's an electronically controlled limited slip differential, active rear steering, variable traction control (with nine different settings!) and variable ratio steering too. It's quite the package.

So those aero add-ons aren't just for show then?

Doesn't seem so. Mercedes says the GT R has 155kg more downforce than the GT S, yet the new car slips through the air easier with less drag. That's despite the huge fixed (manually adjustable) rear wing, wider bodywork and wide tyres (Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, of size 275/35 ZR19 at the front and 325/30 ZR20 at the rear). Aiding all that is a fiendishly complicated double rear diffuser with repositioned exhaust outlets and management of the heat around the exhaust to help reduce lift plus a hidden under-engine active aero feature that alone reduces front end lift by 40kg at high speed.

I'm lost for words...

That's ok, we'll finish up with a word from Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes AMG GmbH: "With the new AMG GT R, we have reached the next level of driving performance. This road-going sports car with motor-racing genes and innovative technical solutions offers an ultimate driving experience that allows people to feel our motorsport origins in every fibre. It combines the driving dynamics of our AMG GT3 racing car with the everyday practicality of the AMG GT. Those with petrol in their veins will be thrilled by the radical longitudinal and lateral acceleration, the precise turn-in, and the sensational grip. We have modified all performance-relevant components and linked them together intelligently for maximum driving dynamics."
