What's all this about?
This is one of the most exciting (not to say beautiful) motor show concept cars we've seen for years. It's called the Mazda RX-Vision and - if you're a fan of the marque - you should know what 'RX' denotes.
A rotary engine?
Got it in one. Front-mounted and driving the rear wheels, Mazda says its Tokyo Motor Show star's powerplant is a 'next-generation unit'. It has even given the engine correct 'Skyactiv-R' branding, fitting in with its production petrol (Skyactiv-G) and diesel (Skyactiv-D) models.
So are we looking at the RX-9?
We sincerely hope so. Mazda is being frustratingly enigmatic with regard to all announcements about the car, but it does give enough hints that the RX-Vision could make showrooms in some form.
In what way was it dropping hints?
The Japanese carmaker says 'countless fans of the brand around the world hope it [the RX-Vision] will become a reality', while it also confirms that while it is currently not mass-producing any rotary models, R&D activities on this form of motive power have 'never ceased'.
Ooh, could it really be a new Mazda RX?
The only way to make sure is to make it completely clear to Mazda that it is absolutely essential that it does. Here's to good old-fashioned peer pressure!
