This is where the lines between virtual reality and the actual physical world get extremely blurry.
How so?
Well, Matt Powers - a professional Formula Drift driver - strapped himself into his Roush Stage 3 Ford Mustang on an empty airfield... and then put on an Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 (ORDK2) headset that effectively rendered him blind.
Crikey, what happened next?
Some serious driving skills, courtesy of a man with a massive set of cojones. Everything Powers did in the real world was transposed into his vision in a digital landscape, full of falling rocks, tunnels and even a CGI Ken Block. Bear in mind that while he's driving through a collapsing computer environment, in the real world his Mustang is tearing about a landing strip at flat chat.
What was all this in aid of?
It's part of the Castrol Edge 'Titanium Trial' driving challenges and this one was called Titanium Drift; it's the follow-up to Titanium Strong Blackout video. Data was extracted from the OBD2 diagnostics of the Mustang and external positional tracking systems, allowing tech specialists Adam Amaral and Glenn Snyder to sync the information with the ORDK2. This essentially turned the Roush Ford into a giant game controller.
