The latest craze for offering standard production models with additional 4x4-esque body kits continues with VW's new Polo Dune. While the
standard Polo remains a class leader across the board, the Polo Dune offers a different take on the supermini market, in the same vein as the
previous generation.
Not since the 4x4 Fiat Panda and Subaru Justy of the 1990s has a supermini held such off-road potential. Yet the Polo Dune's beefy appearance is simply for show; although offering improved visibility and ease of access, the Dune is sadly devoid of any off-road capabilities, including the omission of a four-wheel drive system.
Seated on 17-inch alloy wheels and complete with raised suspension, new bumpers and roof bars, the Polo Dune certainly has individual styling. The Dune is expected to mirror the standard model's successes, with excellent safety, reliability and build quality certain to form an integral part of its appeal. It is certainly well equipped too; the standard equipment list includes ABS, six airbags, CD player, climate control, electric windows and a multifunction computer. Available with either 1.4-litre petrol or diesel engines, the Polo Dune is anticipated to cost around £12,600 on its launch here in the spring.
While the Dune is a unique design, the rugged appearance is nothing more than a façade, and while it may appear an attractive alternative in the supermini market, it is worth noting the £2,000 increase in price over the standard Polo model; this would put us off.
