What's all this about?
Back in 1963, when an enraged Italian tractor manufacturer by the name of Ferruccio Lamborghini decided to stick it to Ferrari by making his own supercars, he turned to his compatriot tyre company Pirelli to provide the rubber for his first creation, the 350 GTV. Since then, every single Lambo that has rolled out of Sant'Agata has been fitted with Pirelli tyres.
That was a lovely history lesson. Now tell me why I should give a flying fig.
Because, to celebrate this 51-year association, Lamborghini has created a special version of the Aventador LP 700-4, which will be called the Pirelli Edition.
Ah, that's more like it. Is it madly up on power and track-focused?
Um, no. It's actually a styling exercise, really, with two-tone body colours available, all garnished with red stripe detailing to pay homage to Pirelli, with that theme continued within. The Aventador LP 700-4 Pirelli Edition is fitted with P Zero tyres (with a red P logo on them) and it can be ordered as either a Coupé or Roadster.
So no increase in the engine's output?
No, but when the car is packing a 700hp/688Nm 6.5-litre V12, which can fire the Aventador to 217mph flat out, why bother? It's a sublime motor.
How much do these Pirelli trinkets cost me?
Well, while Lamborghini hasn't confirmed build numbers as yet, you can order now for a summer 2015 delivery. Expect it to cost more than the £260,000 or so required for a 'standard' Aventador, mind.
