What's all this about?
This is the Hyundai i20 Coupé, designed to attract a younger, hipper sort of buyer to the Korean marque.
Really? Looks like a three-door hatch to me.
Well, it is based on the five-door, new generation i20 but is said to have 'significantly differentiated' looks to the standard hatchback, courtesy of rakish pillars, a big, hexagonal grille, new alloy wheel designs and wide wheel arches. You can also have it in Tangerine Orange, if you so wish, something those folk who buy the plain old i20 won't be able to do.
Has it got a funky interior?
Um, no, but it's up to Hyundai's usual high standards, though if you want you can have the interior in orange too. We're not sure that'll get huge take-up in the UK, but there we go. Hyundai also says it remains practical, with a 'class-leading' 336-litre boot.
What is it powered by?
At launch, there'll be a choice of four engines, two diesel (a 1.1 with 75hp/180Nm and a 1.4 with 90hp and 240Nm) and two petrol (a 1.25 with 84hp and 122Nm, or a new 1.4-litre 'Kappa' unit with 100hp and 134Nm). All are mated to six-speed manual gearboxes as standard, apart from the 1.25, which makes do with five ratios, while a four-speed auto is optional on the 1.4-litre petrol only. A three-cylinder, turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol unit will make an appearance later in 2015.
Does it come with Hyundai's excellent five-year warranty?
Yup, and it's unlimited mileage too. The i20 Coupé and the new five-door will be built at Hyundai's Turkish plant in Izmit.
