I'm sorry, but there are no two ways about it; the Concept Tokyo shown on the Mini stand at this year's
Tokyo Motor Show is simply hideous. In
Frankfurt we were treated to the restrained
Concept Frankfurt, not only previewing the new-look Mini due out next year, but also a reviving of the Traveller-style long-wheelbase version. Sure, the show car featured typically over-the-top ideas such as a vertically split rear tailgate, and a one-piece bonnet, but in essence the concept car looked ready to produce.
Then there's the Concept Tokyo... Its designers essentially took the Concept Frankfurt and threw away all pretence at taste. Check out the gold-coloured alloy wheels and matching Union Jack on the wings. Apparently it "reflects the Japanese appreciation for all things British"... Emphasising the car's 'Britishness' was a built in picnic table and chairs, and a quaint tea set covered in the Paul Smith stripes. Did that company really put its name to a car featuring gold quilted leather seats?! Yuck.
