What's the news?
The Empty Quarter Challenge - a feat that saw a standard Range Rover Sport take on one of the most hostile and barren landscapes on the planet - can now be watched on Land Rover's official YouTube channel.
The documentary takes you both inside and outside the car as off-road racer and Paris Dakar veteran, Moi Torrallardona, takes the Sport on its 10-hour trek to victory. There's also behind the scenes footage that displays the training Moi had to go through before his world record attempt.
But, in case somehow you've forgotten, let's remind ourselves of the task Land Rover set for its new Range Rover Sport. The Empty Quarter is the largest sand desert in the world, spanning almost 530 miles from Wadi Adda Wasir in Saudi Arabia to the border of the United Arab Emirates. The car used was a completely standard Sport model - albeit with some underbody protection to avoid damaging any of its vital organs - fitted with the company's 510hp, 5.0-litre supercharged petrol engine. Even the tyres were the ones it left the factory with.
Despite the massive sand dunes, randomly appearing camels, sand storms and blistering heat, man and machine conquered the journey in just 10 hours and 22 minutes - faster than any land vehicle before it. That's 'land vehicle', not production car. Once the Range Rover Sport had completed its voyage, it was then driven to Dubai where it was exhibited at the Dubai Motor Show two days later.
"The Empty Quarter was an incredible challenge and one that will live with me for the rest of my life," comments Moi. "The Range Rover Sport was the ideal tool for conquering the desert and it is great to be able to relive the challenge through this short documentary."
