What's the news?
The Mazda CX-5 crossover has had a new member added to its family this week, as the Japanese company introduces a SE-L Lux version to the model range. The new specification sits between the base-level SE-L and top-spec Sport guise; and features extra equipment as well as the cleanest version of Mazda's SkyActiv diesel engines.
Exterior
On the outside, nothing sets the new Lux model apart from the regular SE-L. This means that it comes with halogen headlamps, front fog lights, daytime running lights and rear privacy glass as standard. The door mirrors are also fitted with integrated indicator repeaters.
Interior
Again, like the outside, the interior goodies are based on the SE-L. Cruise control, dual-zone climate control, a 5.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, automatic lights, wipers and dimming rear view mirror are all included in the lengthy standard equipment list; however, the Lux version adds full leather upholstery, an electrically adjustable driver's seat, heated seats and a sunroof to the mix, too. Buyers can also specify satellite navigation as an upgrade on their infotainment system.
Mechanicals
The diesel engine used in the Lux model is the most fuel-efficient version of Mazda's 2.2-litre SkyActiv-D unit; which sends 150hp and 380Nm of torque to the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. Economy figures include 61.4mpg on the combined cycle while emissions are just 119g/km. Those seeking a four-wheel drive version of the Lux model are going to be disappointed however, as Mazda has yet to announce any plans to fit this model with its all-wheel drive system.
On the plus side, every version comes with stop-start, Smart City Brake Support and Hill Hold Assist as well as a vast array of airbags.
Anything else?
Despite the extra equipment and efficient engine, the SE-L Lux only carries a premium of £1,200 over the base-level SE-L model - coming to market from £24,495. Thanks to this and its low depreciation, the CX-5 SE-L Lux finds itself with a monthly BIK bill of just £146.60 for those in the 40 per cent tax bracket, making it attractive for business users as well. The new version is available now across the Mazda UK dealership network.
