What's the news?
Caterham has confirmed that a prototype version of the entry-level Seven the company plans to introduce next year is to be on display at the Frankfurt Motor Show. In honour of this news, Caterham has provided us with more information on the brand's tiny-engined sports car.
We now know that the new model is to be named the Caterham Seven 165, and will feature an 80hp engine with power sent to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. The unit in question is a 660cc, turbocharged, three-cylinder Suzuki engine that has been tweaked by Caterham Technology and Innovation (CTI). The engine also produces 107Nm of torque and is fully compliant with the EU5 emissions standards. Despite the lack of outright power, Caterham says that the new model will still offer "the same level of pure driving fun" as other Sevens in the range.
Caterham has also said that the Seven 165 will be tweaked even further for the UK, and will be sold here by the name of the Seven 160 for less than £17,000.
"The Caterham Seven 165 is the car, we believe, will inspire a new generation of drivers to become Caterham enthusiasts," comments Graham Macdonald, CEO of Caterham Cars.
Anything else?
The Caterham Seven 165 is a stark contrast to the mental Seven 485 that was launched earlier in the year - the most powerful Seven ever launched in Europe.
Macdonald says, "Whether you're a seasoned, hardcore driver or whether you're new to sports cars, there will be a Caterham that suits you."
The Seven 165 will start production in January 2014, with first deliveries expected before summer.
