Look inside the load bay of a typical 1994 Ford Transit and you'll probably find miscellaneous tools and building supplies. You wouldn't expect crowds to gather to watch a Transit being driven up the hill at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Ford's SuperVan 3 isn't a typical 20-year old Transit; in the back there's a Cosworth racing engine with nearly 300hp.
The actual output of the 3.0-litre, supercharged V6 is 295hp. To handle the power the chassis is from the Ford C100, a Group C racing car; this is clothed in a glassfibre replica of the third generation Transit body. At seven-eighths scale the SuperVan 3 is slightly smaller than a real 1994 Transit and it features large side air intakes and a deep front air dam. Although the chassis is pure racing car the driving position is at the same height as it would be in the van.
Anthony Reid, former driver for Ford Team Mondeo in the British Touring Car Championship, drove the SuperVan up the Goodwood hill course. Describing his experience behind the wheel Reid said; "Over the last 20 years of racing cars, Ford's SuperVan 3 is by far the craziest vehicle I have ever driven. It's ludicrously loud, incredibly quick and received masses of attention from the Goodwood crowd."
