Toyota has launched a new version of the Celica coupe. Despite making references in the press release to Toyota's GT-One Le Mans car, the Celica GT is a styling exercise only, with the 190bhp variable valve-timing engine and six-speed manual gearbox unchanged.
For £22,595 on-the-road (a premium of £1,095 over the T Sport model the GT is based on), the Celica gains an extrovert body kit including fussy side skirts, a new front air dam and a very large rear wing, similar in appearance to the previous generation Celica GT-4's. The alloy wheel size remains at 17-inches, but the GT gets a bespoke design. Enhancing the car's stance is a lowered suspension.
Inside, the upholstery is changed to Alcantara, and the gear knob is changed. A CD autochanger also comes as standard in the GT.
This Celica generation was launched in 1999, and with Toyota now competing for honours at the top of the Formula One table it can't be too long before we see a new car launched. Perhaps at this October's Tokyo Motor Show?
