This summer, GEM Motoring Assist is urging drivers to stop driving in flip-flops, as many drivers may be unaware to the dangers this particular type of shoe can carry. As flip-flops have no heel support, they can easily become wedged underneath or between pedals; causing drivers to lose full control of their car, potentially causing an accident.
Drivers wearing other unsuitable footwear, especially high-heels, tend to wear a sensible pair of shoes when driving; however flip-flops often get overlooked. "Keeping an appropriate pair of shoes in the car at all times for driving is imperative," says David Williams MBE, CEO of GEM Motoring Assist. "Any kind of distraction caused by shoes can cause a dangerous situation."
Whilst there are laws abroad concerning driving in flip-flops, no such laws exist in the UK; and it is down to the common sense of drivers to decide whether or not their driving attire is appropriate.
Williams finishes by saying, "It is also wise to have a comfortable pair of shoes in case of a breakdown situation; where you may have to walk to a motorway service phone for help."
