Although summer is only just over the IAM has issued some advice to motorists thinking of fitting winter tyres this year.
If you do plan to fit winter tyres the IAM suggests getting them ordered now to beat the rush when temperatures drop. Winter tyres are made out of materials that are designed to stay flexible at lower temperatures. They also feature a tread pattern designed to work on snow and ice.
Drivers who don't fancy the idea of changing all four tyres can instead buy snow chains or snow socks. These are easily stored in the boot of the car when not required and fit over the existing tyres for grip in snowy conditions.
The IAM's chief examiner said that, after two particularly severe winters, drivers in some areas may feel reassured by the extra grip winter tyres provide. He also advocated safe, sensible driving in poor conditions; regardless of what tyres you have fitted. Finally, make sure that the tyres have at least 3mm of tread and are inflated correctly. Don't be tempted to lower pressures as this won't give any more grip, but may cause tyre overheating and blow-outs.
