Following its world debut in concept form at Paris two years ago, the new Mazda 6 MPS was unveiled in production form at the
2004 Paris Show. Remaining true to the concept's looks and promises of performance, the 6 MPS totes 260bhp from a new direct injection 2.3-litre turbocharged four cylinder driving all four wheels through an all-new active torque split transmission and 6-speed box. This sees Mazda entering into the fray against the top line Impreza STi and Evo 8 MR 260, a fairly bold move, and no mean challenge.
The new powertrain is aimed to offer not just outright pace but also driveability, refinement and economy with a broad spread of torque ensuring linear responses and effective and usable power - the torque curve is all but flat from 2,000rpm through to 5,000rpm. The headline figures are a 150mph top speed with a 0-60mph time of 6.5 seconds.
The MPS features various exterior modifications including redesigned bumpers, spoilers and skirts and 18" alloys. These add up to a subtle yet purposeful exterior that befits a modern high performance sports saloon. Interior trim also reflects the MPS's status with new semi-bucket seats and a variety of new materials and trim finish.
