Images and details of a prototype version of the SLS AMG E-Cell - the electric version of the company's gullwinged supercar - have surfaced on the internet.
The switch from petrol to battery power will mean in a drop in power, though with 624lb.ft and a claimed 0-60mph time of four seconds, no-one will complain about this electric car having milk-float performance.
The lithium ion polymer batteries are positioned to keep the weight low and balanced. There are four electric motors, each one driving its own wheel. Although this required new front suspension Mercedes claims that the E-Cell will handle as well as the conventional SLS.
The bright yellow - officially 'AMG Lumilectric Mango' - prototype also features an adjustable front splitter, new diffuser and wider grille. Additionally, there are changes to the interior including buttons for park, reverse and drive; displays for battery status and estimated range; and a 10-inch touch screen infotainment system.
Details such as range and price are still to be announced but it is expected that the production E-Cell will go in sale in 2013.
