The Proton Concept City car will be unveiled at the 80th
Geneva motor show next week. Italian design powerhouse ItalDesign is responsible for the exterior design while the powertrain features a Lotus developed series hybrid system.
The petrol engine and transmission come courtesy of Lotus Engineering, the former being a three-cylinder, 1.2-litre 'Range Extender' engine designed in-house. Transmission of power is via a single-speed gearbox. Lotus states that the Proton will deliver low emissions, but will also give good performance, however no figures have been released as yet.
The hybrid system allows the driver to cruise around town using just the battery and emitting no pollution, with the engine cutting in when required for a recharge. The Proton City car will have the ability to be recharged via a standard mains supply too.
It remains to be seen what will come of the Proton City car. For now at least it seems to be just a showcase for Lotus's engineering ability. We'll find out more in
Geneva.
