Forget cakes and crumpled wrapping paper, Mazda is celebrating the 20th birthday of the MX-5 in the best way possible: with a limited edition model.
Imaginatively called the Mazda MX-5 20th Anniversary Limited Edition, it's based on the 1.8 SE model to get back to the basics of open-top sports car thrills. The special edition comes with £650 worth of extras included in its £16,850 price, which makes it just £55 more expensive than a standard SE.
The extras include 10-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels, front fog lights, chrome detailing around the front grille, headlights and fog lights, body-coloured roll bars and strut brace, and 20th Anniversary scuff plates on the door sills with a unique limited edition number. There are also aluminium pedals, air conditioning, a body-coloured dash insert and Anniversary floor mats.
Mazda has allocated 600 of all 20th Anniversary Limited Edition production for the UK, which is 32% of the Anniversary production run and reflects the MX-5's huge popularity here. The company says it will pass the 100,000 marker of all versions of the MX-5 sold in the UK in 2010, adding to the 850,000 MX-5s sold worldwide to date.
The MX-5 20th Anniversary Limited Edition arrives in UK showrooms on 1 March, with the same performance as a standard 1.8 SE of 0-62mph in 9.9 seconds and 121mph top speed. It'll be on display at the
Geneva Motor Show.
