Vauxhall has added an ecoFLEX model to the
new Astra range. Based on the five-door model, it features a number of mechanical and aerodynamic changes in the pursuit of better fuel economy.
The ecoFLEX uses a 94bhp, 1.3-litre CDTi diesel engine. It is fitted with a particulate filter and an 'economy-optimised' electronic control unit. Power is sent through a five-speed gearbox with high gear ratios.
Vauxhall has also spent time refining the Astra's aerodynamics to cut drag. Refinements include a shutter that closes at speed to smooth airflow at the front of the car and opens to admit cooling air to the radiator at low speeds. There is also a gearchange light to encourage frugal driving.
At the pumps owners could see up to 67.3mpg (the official combined cycle figure). Emissions of 109g/km will keep tax costs down for both private owners and company car drivers.
Prices for the Astra ecoFLEX start at £17,920 for the Exclusiv, rising to £20,320 for the SE. For the first time there is a sporty-looking SRi model too. All variants will go on sale in April.
