Scaglietti draws the crowds at the NEC
The Ferrari Scaglietti has divided opinion with its looks - the NEC was the UK's first chance to sample it.

The Ferrari 612 Scaglietti made its official UK debut at the 2004 Motor Show Live in Birmingham. The single example, being shown at the NEC in 'Blu Mirabeau', took pride of place alongside the Challenge Stradale and 575 M Maranello on a compact stand.

Ferrari's latest front-engined coupe received its world premiere at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit at the beginning of the year; the all-new, aluminium four-seater immediately raising the art of grand touring to a new level of sophistication.

Longer, wider and taller than the 456M it replaces, the 612 Scaglietti offers ease-of-entry for rear-seat passengers to an outstandingly luxurious cabin that will accommodate four adults in absolute comfort.

Powered by an advanced V12 engine it has a top speed of 199 mph and for the first time on a Ferrari, computerised electronic stability and traction control.

Demand for the exciting new model in the UK, one of the marque's strategically most important and well-established markets, was instantaneous. With first deliveries to customers commencing in July, this year's UK right hand drive allocation of 60 cars has already been quickly sold, and orders are now being taken for deliveries running well into the course of next year.

The eye-catching car on display has certainly been grabbing attention in Birmingham. Photographs do not do the Scaglietti any favours; the body looks quite plain and the front has been called ugly. In the metal, the new Ferrari is a lot better; the rear end has curves hidden from the lens of a camera; the front end is sharp and distinctive, especially when viewed at certain angles; the side scallops are unmistakably a Ferrari characteristic. We may have preferred the elegant sportiness of the 456 GT, but the 612 Scaglietti is a worthy successor, especially in the dynamics department. Ferrari's UK importer is confident that it has yet another winner on its hands.
