At the
Geneva motor show Rover unveiled a new range topping V8 version of the 75. Harking bark to the iconic P5B V8 saloon of the '70s the new 75 features a reworked front grille (reminiscent of Audi's new A6), in addition to the latest 75 facelift, to evoke the memory of the hugely popular classic saloons. The V8 will initially be released based on the range topping Connoisseur SE version of the 75 meaning a wealth of luxurious features as standard including GPS, in-car TV and a DVD player. The wording of MG Rover's press release hints a lower specified budget V8 may be offered in the future.
Making use of the platform developed for the MG ZT 260, Rover has reworked the powertrain to use an automatic in place of the MG's manual. Due to the torquey nature of the Ford V8 there isn't a huge drop off in performance from the ZT, with claimed figures of 150 mph and 0-60 mph in "comfortably less than 7 seconds." The chassis has also been modified to give a level of ride comfort appropriate for a saloon with luxury pretensions without sacrificing too much of the ZT's handling.
The 75 V8 is expected to go on sale in May with final prices and specifications set to be finalised nearer the time.
The Car Enthusiast hope to review the 75 V8 later this year. Watch out for the report on the main
Road Tests page.
