A simple solution to convertible roof design has been developed by German specialist Webasto. Called the 'Light', it's designed to save weight and be easier to use than most current soft-tops.

The Light does without a complex frame and simply flips up and over the cabin to seal out the weather. It has a heated glass rear screen and sits flush with the body when lowered to retain boot space.

Webasto says the 13kg Light is poised to go into mass production and will help car makers improve economy and reduce emissions due to the new roof weighing significantly less than more traditional designs.

The Light roof will make its world debut at the Geneva motor show next week.
