| New Concept Preview | 2008 Detroit Auto Show | Ford Explorer America |
Ford has revealed details of an eco-conscious, six-seater off-road concept ahead if its debut at the
North American International Auto Show in Detroit this month. Ford claims that the concept acknowledges people's growing demand for efficient vehicles by implementing a number of fuel saving technologies and construction techniques, which Ford hopes can rapidly be adopted across its fleet of passenger cars.
The Explorer America claims a 20-30 percent improvement on the current Ford Explorer's economy figures, depending on engine size - with the engines themselves having undergone a weight-busting reworking. The 3.5-litre V6 in the concept has shed 68kg and has been downsized despite producing more power. Ford's smaller four-cylinder, 2.0-litre petrol unit is to be showcased with 'EcoBoost' technology, which injects fuel directly into each cylinder in small, precise amounts thus improving fuel efficiency.
The concept was built using a uni-body construction technique, which should enable a compact exterior design yet provide a sizeable interior space. The Explorer America's assembly also helps to improve shell rigidity and its safety rating, whilst extensive use of lightweight materials, suspension and chassis components further reduce overall weight and increase fuel economy. Ford has also fitted fuel-saving electric power steering, which should make it into 90 percent of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury cars by 2012.
