Alfa Romeo is set to offer its first limited slip differential (LSD) on 147 and GT models using 1.9-litre JTDM turbodiesel engines. The system will greatly improve cornering traction whilst minimising understeer by sending power to the front wheel with most grip. A rethink of application sees Alfa mate the Q2 LSD to a front double wishbone suspension rather than a conventional strut set-up; Alfa claims to subsequently achieve greater levels of fine-tuning of the car's handling.
Along with the Q2 LSD, both the 147 and GT gain a number of extra features including a lowered ride height and uprated anti-roll bars, as well as new springs and dampers tailored to suit the characteristics of the LSD. The 147 will ride on larger 17-inch tyres, whilst the GT will use 18-inch items.
To further differentiate the Q2-shod cars from ordinary Alfas, they'll also boast satin finishes to the front grilles and mirror housings. A subtle rear spoiler will also be fitted alongside a sportier chrome exhaust tip. Inside, Q2s will all come with leather upholstery complete with red stitching, whilst the driver's feet will be treated to aluminium pedals and special Q2 kick plates.
Prices start at £16,950 for the 147 1.9-litre JTDM, whilst the diesel-powered GT will start at £21,430.
Not satisfied with the development of a new LSD, Alfa Romeo has also produced a Q-Tronic automatic gearbox for 1.9-litre and 2.4-litre JTDM engines, which will also see service in the 3.2-litre JTS models of the Brera, 159 and Spider.
Owners that opt for the new system will have both manual and automatic modes available, using a sequential gear lever that negates the need for a clutch pedal. The Q-Tronic system additionally offers a 'Sport' button, which when pressed will hold gears higher into the rev-range before changing up. Alfa says the system maximises driver comfort by selecting gears most suited to revs during cornering.
Breras using the new transmission will start at £30,700 for the 3.2-litre JTS V6 Q4, with the 159 saloon housing the 1.9-litre JTDM diesel unit costing £22,200 and rising to £29,900 for the range-topping 3.2-litre JTS. The 159 Sportwagon Q-Tronic will start at £24,700, with the Alfa Spider costing £32,700 featuring the 3.2-litre petrol V6.
