AMG, the performance-boosting arm of Mercedes-Benz, celebrated its 40th anniversary at this year's
New York Auto Show, unveiling a new Black Series iteration of the CLK 63 AMG - closely based on the current Formula One Safety Car.
Based on the CLK 63 AMG, the new car is powered by a 500bhp version of the 6.3-litre V8 engine and is claimed to reach 60mph in 4.1 seconds with a top speed of 186mph. The engine is coupled to Mercedes' latest 7G-tronic transmission, which features 'sport' and 'manual' shift modes, but does without the 'comfort' setting. In the manual mode, shift times are claimed to be 20 per cent faster than in sport, with no automatic downshifting or upshifting under full-load or kickdown, allowing the driver full control.
Aesthetically, the Black Series is kitted out with various carbon-fibre elements, including cooling air intakes under the front bumper, lateral air outlets in the front wings, a rear diffuser and a bootlid spoiler. The Black Series transformation is more than just an aggressive body kit though, even if the enhancements are entirely functional.
Performance components include a new full length dual exhaust, limited-slip rear differential and separate transmission oil-cooler. An adjustable suspension with new spring links, wheel carriers, thrust arms and camber and torque struts has been fitted enabling the ride height, compression and rebound characteristics of the dampers to be adjusted; along with camber and toe-in. The chassis has been stiffened through strut braces in the engine and boot compartments and the traction and stability control systems have been specially calibrated for track driving.
Bulging wings accommodate staggered-width 19-inch forged aluminium wheels shod with 265/30 R19 front and 285/30 R19 rear tyres, which fail to conceal larger vented and perforated composite disc brakes measuring 361mm in diameter, with 330mm discs at the rear.
The CLK 63 AMG's rear seats have been removed to achieve greater weight savings, transforming the car into a two-seater. Carbon-fibre trim and leather covered AMG bucket seats feature aggressive side bolsters to keep occupants firmly in place. The DTM-inspired sports steering wheel is also 15mm smaller and features aluminium shift paddles.
The CLK 63 AMG Black Series is scheduled to go on sale in limited numbers by the end of this year, with a price tag that has yet to be announced. We're betting you'll need deep pockets if you want to park one on your drive.
