What's all this about?

This is a Forza Horizon creation brought to life. Though the Lamborghini Huracán Sterrato reveal is still a couple of weeks away, Lamborghini has released a video that more or less shows the car in its final form and doing things that Lambos aren’t supposed to do.

I know what a Huracán is, but what’s a Sterrato?

Sterrato is the Italian for “dirt road” which gives some indication as to just what the new Huracán variant is. Seemingly inspired by the raft of lifted “Safari”-style concepts and one-off builds revealed over the past few years, the Sterrato is essentially an off-road, rally-inspired version of the Huracán replete with a two-inch suspension lift, plastic cladding, a roof rack and front spotlights. All of those features are visible in the latest teaser video which shows the Sterrato sliding around on loose sand and gravel which is definitely a departure for Lamborghini whose cars are normally more at home on the track or cruising down the boulevard.

Isn't Porsche doing something similar?

That’s right. Porsche is due to reveal the 911 Dakar later this week and both it and the Sterrato are similar in concept. With the 911 having achieved some degree of success in international rallying in the sixties, seventies and eighties including an outright victory in the 1984 Paris-Dakar, Porsche can at least claim some precedent for the Dakar. Lamborghini, on the other hand, doesn’t have much of a history when it comes to rallying its road cars.

What do we know about the Sterrato so far?

Not very much just yet. We do know that it’ll be powered by the venerable (and very thirsty) naturally aspirated 5.2-litre Lamborghini-Audi V10, in what marks that unit’s last outing in a new Lamborghini. Emissions regulations are bringing the days of the big, normally-aspirated combustion engine to an end and Lamborghini’s future (or at least that of the Huracán’s successor) lies with a hybrid-assisted twin-turbo V8. In the Sterrato, that engine is likely to be in the same state of tune as the one found in the Huracán LP 640-2 STO meaning 640hp and 565Nm of torque. As to whether the Sterrato will feature all-wheel-drive remains to be seen, as does nearly everything else.

When are we likely to know more?

The Huracán Sterrato is due to be fully revealed on November 30 at the Art Basel event in Miami, so expect to hear more about the new all-terrain Lamborghini closer to then.
