Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) picked up a hat-trick of wins in this year's UK Car of the Year (UKCotY) awards, as all of the Porsche Taycan (Best Performance), Tesla Model 3 (Best Executive) and Kia e-Niro (Best Crossover) walked off with the title in their respective sectors. Porsche, indeed, was the only manufacturer to pick up two gongs, the 992 911 Cabriolet winning the aptly named Best Cabriolet award - a title the marque first won with the Boxster GTS in 2015. Staying at the upper end of the market sector, the utterly exquisite Bentley Flying Spur made it consecutive wins in the Best Luxury category, following the Continental GT's victory in last year's UKCotY battle. A familiar name picked up the Best Estate award for 2020, as the BMW 3 Series Touring took the honours for its blend of, well, being brilliant at pretty much everything. Meanwhile, a couple of classy new hatchbacks collected the Best Supermini and Best Small Hatch awards, these being the latest Renault Clio V and superb fourth-generation Mazda3 respectively. And last, but by no means least, the excellent new Range Rover Evoque took the Best Premium Crossover honours, this being the first award Land Rover has won at UKCotY since the Range Rover Sport picked up a gong in the inaugural competition in 2004. This year's shortlist of nine category winners will now go forward to the next round of judging among the panel of 28 of the UK's leading motoring journalists... plus, er, plus me, and then the winner will be announced on February 28.
