What's the news?
Mercedes has revealed a new GLE Coupe ahead of its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month. There are diesel and AMG versions to pore over so far.
Better tell us about the diesels...
Just two diesel models kick off the range, both powered by versions of the silky-smooth 'OM656' straight-six engine. The GLE Coupe 350 d 4Matic (and breathe) gets 272hp and 600Nm, while the 400 d's engine makes an even more impressive 330hp and 700Nm of torque. Emissions are in the 197-212g/km range for both.
Torque-tastic. Can the AMG compete?
Not in terms of torque output, no. The Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 4Matic+ Coupe (this is getting ridiculous now) is powered by a biturbo 3.0-litre straight-six that uses a 48-volt electrical system to enhance efficiency and boost performance. One of those turbos is electric, for example, and the integrated starter-generator can boost the engine's output with an additional 22hp and 250Nm of torque. The engine itself makes 435hp and 520Nm, which, in conjunction with the AMG-specific four-wheel drive, helps get this version of the GLE Coupe to 62mph from rest in 5.3 seconds. Naturally, it also gets a lot more as standard, including air suspension and adaptive damping, the option of 22-inch rims and lots more besides.
