2019-04-23: Special DBS Superleggera marks Aston Le Mans triumph

What's all this about?

It's a cross between the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera and the DB11 Volante. And it's called (yup...) the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante. It's the fastest convertible the British brand has ever made, topping out at the same 211mph as the DBS Superleggera Coupe, and it'll cost you around £247,500 if you want one.

Cor! Is this a supercar convertible, then?

Well, its parent company calls it a Super GT, but the stats make faintly ridiculous reading. Like a DB11 Volante compared to its DB11 Coupe relation, the Superleggera open-top is 110kg heavier than the Superleggera closed-top. However, thanks to a 725hp/900Nm 5.2-litre V12 driving the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic and a carbon-fibre propshaft, it'll thunder from 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds and hit 100mph just 3.1 seconds later. Thanks to all of the DBS Superleggera's clever aero-trickery, it'll generate 177kg of downforce at 211mph (V-max) - that's just 3kg less than the Coupe. And, thanks to all of the DB11 Volante's folding-roof trickery, it can raise its hood in 16 seconds or lower it in just 14, while the stacked, stashed lid measures just 260mm deep when it's out of sight. Eight colours for the fabric top can be specified, including Bordeaux Red, Atlantic Blue and Titan Grey, and deliveries of the DBS Superleggera Volante should commence in the third quarter of this year.

Anything else to add?

Andy Palmer, president and CEO of Aston Martin Lagonda, said: "There is nothing on Earth that compares to the roar of an Aston Martin V12 and I believe that the DBS Superleggera Volante provides one of the greatest sensory experiences in the automotive world. This is truly a testament to the no-compromise approach of our engineers and designers, to deliver the two key aspects of a convertible Super GT. Exceptional performance in an irresistible form, DBS Superleggera has justifiably won the hearts and minds of Super GT lovers the world over, and the Volante takes this concept to the next level."
