When transferring a private number plate for a vehicle it can be registered in your name or a nominee. You are able to transfer your registration:
o From one of your vehicles to another
o To a vehicle you're going to buy
o To another person's vehicle
Requirements
If you want to transfer your number plate then you will have to be in contact with the DVLA, but in order to process the application there are some requirements:
o If transferring from one vehicle to another, both must be registered with the DVLA
o Both vehicles should have a valid MOT
o If requested by the DVLA, both vehicles must be available for an inspection
If your plate begins with a 'Q' or 'NIQ' in Northern Ireland, then you will be unable to transfer your number plate. The same goes for number plates being transferred to make a vehicle appear younger.
When you've decided that you are able to apply to transfer your plate, you will have to fill out and send a V137 form to the DVLA. This was known as a V778 form; however, the new method is quicker and easier. If you are transferring the plate to another person then both parties will have to complete the application process.
The application costs £80 and must include an MOT certificate for both vehicles if transferring to another and a completed V62 application for a vehicle registration certificate for both vehicles.
Transferring a plate to a non-taxed vehicle
The process of transferring a number plate is easiest when both vehicles are taxed; however, if the vehicle that currently holds the plate is not taxed, it is still possible to apply the V137 if:
o The tax ran out within the last 12 months
o There is no break between the tax running out and the SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification)
Adding a nominee
If another person is going to be using the number plate that you have purchased, then it is possible to assign them as a nominee. It is free to add a person as a nominee and can be done during the transfer application process.
Service fees
When removing the number plate and not assigning it to another vehicle, the retention certificate lasts up to 10 years. Once you reach the end of the 10 years you will be notified, and you can then renew your certificate for up to another 10 years absolutely free. It is also free to change or add another nominee to your registration plate.
The only cost you will incur is if you need to change the details or replace a lost or stolen certificate, as this will cost £25.
Assigning a number plate to a vehicle
If you want to transfer your plate onto another vehicle then you'll have to apply through the DVLA. The plate can be used on another vehicle that is registered with the DVLA and taxed and used in Britain. In order to assign the plate to another car you will need:
o The V750 certificate or V778 retention certificate signed and completed
o An MOT certificate if the vehicle is over three years old
Now you've got all of the information, you can begin the process of transferring your number plate whether onto one of your other vehicles or to someone else's.
