What's this then?

This is the updated Ford Edge, which now comes with sporty ST-Line trim and a new engine.

V8, is it?

Um, no. Despite the Edge's US heritage, the new engine is a diesel, Ford's new EcoBlue four-cylinder turbo. It's a twin-turbo, and the range-topping version makes a healthy 238hp. Plus there's a new eight-speed automatic gearbox which learns your driving style and which even has a system that adjust the clutch pressure to find the smoothest gear change it can. The top-spec EcoBlue engine comes with four-wheel drive as standard, as does a new 190hp version. There's a 150hp model as well.

So how about the new trim

If you fancy, you can have the updated Edge in ST-Line spec which means you get a chunky bodykit, 20-inch wheels and a blacked-out grille. Inside there are a pair of sporty 10-way adjustable electric half-leather seats and aluminium pedals. It's tuned a bit too, with sportier suspension settings and uprated steering.

It certainly sounds sporty. Anything else?

On the tech front, the updated Edge now comes with a new eight-inch touchscreen with Ford's SYNC3 software, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. And there's a new all-digital instrument panel, which is Ford's answer to Volkswagen's Active Info Display. There's also a new Jaguar-style rotary controller for the automatic gearshift.

Roelant de Waard, vice president, Marketing, Sales and Service, Ford of Europe, said: "Helping customers effortlessly deal with stop-start traffic using our most advanced driver assistance technologies to-date, and cruise in comfort supported by our refined and fuel-efficient new 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine and eight-speed automatic gearbox, the new Ford Edge is our most compelling offering yet for the ever-growing numbers of European customers migrating towards SUVs."
