What have we got here, then?

Mercedes-Benz has announced UK prices for the revised S-Class Coupe, which is now on sale. And don't think this is an affordable car - you'll need at least £103,715 to park your backside in the S 560.

S 560? I thought the opener was the S 500?

Ah, no. That model has been replaced, its 455hp 4.7-litre biturbo V8 replaced by a 4.0-litre biturbo V8 with 469hp and 700Nm. Nevertheless, the S 560 can do 155mph flat out and runs from 0-62mph in just 4.6 seconds, all while delivering up to 34mpg with just 188g/km CO2 emissions. Not bad for a car of this size and opulence.

So is the new V8 a detuned version of the one from the Mercedes-AMG 63 models?

No. Because that very hand-built engine can be found in the S 63 Coupe (from £127,515), where it replaces the old 585bhp 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 and is now running in E 63 S trim. To put it another way, we mean a colossal 612hp and 900Nm, although that latter figure is the same as before. It'll do 0-62mph in 4.2 seconds and remains limited to 155mph, with 31.7mpg and 203g/km CO2 said to be possible.

The only S-Class Coupe that remains mechanically unchanged in the facelift transition is the flagship S 65 (from £189,615), which retains its 6.0-litre biturbo V12 with 630hp and 1,000Nm. It'll tick off 0-62mph in 4.1 seconds and is still limited to 155mph, while 23.7mpg and 279g/km CO2 means it's really only a car for oil barons.

What sort of options are we talking?

Well, all models come extensively equipped as standard, given their prestige status and whopping price tags, so expect multiple luxuries even in the S 560 AMG Line, while the S 63 and S 65 models are dripping in toys. However, the Premium equipment upgrade on the S 560 costs £4,995 and includes Nappa leather, a 360-degree camera, the Warmth Comfort package, the Front Seat Comfort package, the Air Balance package and the Energising Comfort package.

For £2,580, the Driving Assistance package includes Active Distance Assist Distronic adaptive cruise control, Active Steering Assist, Active Speed Limit Assist, Active Braking Assist, Evasive Steering Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist and Pre-Safe Plus. It's about as close as you can get to autonomous driving tech on a new car.

Route-based speed adaptation is now included, which enables the vehicle to slow down for upcoming junctions, roundabouts and toll roads. If you've already gone for the Premium equipment on the S 560, then the Driving Assistance package is reduced to £1,695.
