What's all this about?
How many 70-year-olds do you know that have gone on a worldwide bender to celebrate their birthday? We'd hasten a guess and say zero, but this is Ferrari we're talking about, and the Italian firm isn't going to leave the occasion pass without a few fireworks.
That's past retirement age...
It sure is, but the Prancing Horse shows no signs of being ready for the glue factory just yet. To celebrate, Ferrari has built a roofless version of the mad LaFerrari and called it the Aperta (everything sounds better in Italian), although all examples already sold out of course. There's also a huge list of events in 60 countries planned between now and September.
Where did it all start?
The 125 S was the first car to actually bear Enzo Ferrari's name, and on March 12th 1947 the car made its way out of the factory gates and onto Via Abetone Inferiore for the first time, thereby setting the foundations for the most famous car company of all. The 125 S was driven by greats like Tazio Nuvolari, and Ferrari's pedigree and list of racing successes since is something that most companies can only dream of.
What about these events then?
A video re-enactment of the 125 S debut is being released, along with a host of other celebrations throughout the year, which will culminate in a big party in Maranello on September 9-10th.
