What's all this about?

Alfa Romeo is taking orders for the new Giulia saloon now. The launch range starts at £29,180 with the 2.0-litre petrol model, plus there's a choice of 2.2-litre diesel power and the flagship £59,000 Quadrifoglio. Four trim levels are available initially; Giulia, Super, Tecnica and Quadrifoglio. An additional variant, Speciale, will be available later this month.

How much are the diesels?

Prices start at £30,750 for the 150hp diesel in Super trim, with the 180hp version costing £31,950.

What do you get for the money?

The Giulia uses a new rear-wheel-drive platform with 50/50 weight distribution and all UK cars come with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Standard safety equipment across the range includes Forward Collision Warning with Autonomous Emergency Brake and pedestrian recognition. Integrated Brake System and Lane Departure Warning are also part of the package. These safety features contributed to the Alfa Romeo Giulia's Five Star Euro NCAP rating, with 98 per cent protection result for adult occupants.
Dual-zone climate control, Alfa DNA driving mode selector, Alfa Connect infotainment system with DAB, MP3 and Bluetooth connectivity, 8-speaker audio system, rear parking sensors and cruise control are also part of the package.

Are there any performance figures?

Entry point to the range is the 2.0-litre turbo petrol with 200hp; the official 0-62mph figure is 6.6 seconds with a top speed of 146mph. Fuel consumption is 47.9mpg with CO2 emissions of 138g/km. The 2.2-litre turbodiesel is available with 150 or 180hp, fuel consumption is identical for both outputs at 67.3mpg and 109g/km. Alfa Romeo claims the 510hp Quadrifoglio will do 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds and eventually reach 191mph; CO2 emissions are 198g/km with fuel consumption of 33.2mpg.
